Nestled southeast of the majestic volcanic Mount Hood, the Lower Deschutes River is central Oregon’s ultimate adventure playground, celebrated for its whitewater rafting, fishing, swimming, and kayaking. Originating in the Cascades, the Deschutes is one of the largest spring-fed rivers in the United States. As snow melts in the mountains, it seeps into the ground and reemerges as springs, sending the Deschutes cascading north for 252 miles through Oregon, ultimately meeting the Columbia River and flowing into the Pacific Ocean.

Designated a National Wild and Scenic River in 1988, the Deschutes River is protected for its remarkable geology, rich history, and diverse species of plants, wildlife, and fish. The river descends over 1,000 feet to its confluence with the Columbia and flows through an incredible red canyon sculpted from volcanic basalt. Towering vertical cliffs and wide talus slopes frame the whitewater, adorned with numerous caves. The Deschutes River Canyon not only boasts breathtaking scenery but also serves as a prime nesting habitat for birds of prey such as bald eagles, peregrine falcons, and osprey. The river corridor is home to a variety of wildlife, including songbirds, herons, mule deer, and reptiles. The wild steelhead and native trout make this river a renowned fly fishing destination.
