The Grand Canyon of Oregon: Experience the Owyhee River

Few have had the opportunity to explore the Owyhee River Canyon, a hidden gem in the realm of multi-day wilderness river rafting.

Protected by the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act since 1984, over 120 miles of the Owyhee River remain untouched by development. Often referred to as Oregon’s Grand Canyon, this river features exhilarating Class III rapids set within a sprawling desert canyon. Roaming its rugged landscape, you may encounter bighorn sheep and cougars against the backdrop of towering volcanic cliffs that reach nearly twice the height of the Washington Monument.

Wildlife and Rich History of the Owyhee River

As your guides share insights, you can spot herds of antelope, soaring birds of prey, and other unique wildlife that frequent the river. The journey includes fascinating archaeological sites, distinctive geological formations, and rejuvenating hot springs, making it one of the most extraordinary river adventures in the world.

In 1820, Hawaiian trappers were among the first to venture into the canyon, never to return. The challenging rapids and rugged terrain kept this wild area hidden for generations, while miners explored its deep basalt layers. Few have had the privilege of experiencing the mystique of the Owyhee River wilderness.
